Jayne Cooper

Jayne Cooper was born in 1971 in Hessle, East Yorkshire. After successfully graduating from Glasgow School of Art in 1999 Jayne moved to Hull and then to Doncaster in 2003.

The birth of her daughter and the ensuing break from painting has given her new inspiration to explore the collaboration between the artist (professional, trained, conceptual) and her daughter as the subject (intuitive, natural, abstract). Jayne is increasingly interested in the tensions and balances between the intended and the accidental with the appliance of paint on the canvas, the learnt or authored techniques and the aleatory.

The pieces often begin with a narrative; a portrait; some figures in a room, though they may well be lost in the process, written out of the emerging drama, morphed into something darker, dreamlike and fascinatingly erotic.

In contrast there are also a series of hallucinatory landscapes, bereft of humans, but home to eerily familiar 'cuddly' creatures, watching from their warped glades.

"I am compelled to make images" Jayne says, "and from my earliest works I've been exploring how paint can be used expressively... how different marks, techniques and styles can co-exist and successfully contrast within a single image."
